about the artist
In case we haven’t met yet, I’m Sarah Dudley, a Canadian artist based in Berlin. I make oil paintings, stone lithographs, and sculptures that invite you to bask in fields of luscious colour, and take a moment to reconnect with your inner self.
Painting as emotional expression, the most powerful yet intangible human language, is what drives my artistic practice. If you’re not sure what that means, think about the last time you felt something very strongly; could you imagine giving those emotions a shape, a size, a colour?
Art and healing
Through my art, I want to connect with you on a human, authentic level that awakens a feeling inside — maybe even an emotion you weren't aware of before. Tapping in to your feelings, having the courage to pull back the curtain and look inside is incredibly freeing and healing. It is my mission to create artwork that encourages you to explore your inner being and discover your own source of personal strength.
Searching for what's beneath the surface of our everyday lives has always fascinated me. My art explores subjects from emotions to ancient myths, to particle and astrophysics. I want to take you on a journey to discover what makes us humans tick, what is our place in the world, and most importantly, how we relate to each other.
I’ve been a passionate artist my whole life. Probably my earliest large-scale work was done at the age of 4, entirely in yellow crayon covering the two metre wide back wall of my bedroom closet. Being scolded for drawing on the bedroom walls apparently only succeeded in forcing my efforts “behind closed doors”. At least my parents had a sense of humour about it when they discovered the “masterpiece” on moving day!
Luckily they still encouraged my creativity, and as I grew up my Dad set up still lives with vegetables for my brother and I to practice drawing. As a teenager I discovered my love for printmaking, especially stone lithography, in Saturday classes at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
I studied Fine Art at Concordia University in Montréal with a semester at the École de beaux-arts de Nîmes in France, and finished my Master's at the Tamarind Institute in New Mexico.
Since 1996 my work has been exhibited in eight countries, and is represented in a number of private and corporate collections, including the Allied Irish Bank and the Canson Talens Corporation.
When I'm not working in the studio, I'll be training for a marathon, eating lots of vegan food, playing with my cat, or watching RuPaul's Drag Race or Star Trek!
