EDITIONS // DARK MATTER PRINTS

Dark Matter prints and sculptures, installation view
Für den Text auf Deutsch bitte hier klicken. Each of the seven sculptures in this series is a stage in the process of breaking and then healing the heart.

The title “Dark Matter” makes a connection between the astrophysical phenomena and human emotions. Dark matter can’t be measured, seen, or touched; we only can infer its existence based on the gravitational effect it exerts on other astral bodies.

I see emotions in a similar way: we feel them, but they remain intangible; we only know of an emotion’s presence because of the physiological and mental effects it creates in us.
These archival pigment prints (Giclée) are made with lightfast inks and printed on heavyweight Hahnemühle photo paper. Each print is hand-signed and numbered, and mounted in museum mat board cut to fit a 40 cm / 16" frame.

Edition sizes are strictly limited to 20 impressions per image.

Phase 1 is the heart in its full glory, pulsing and glowing with life, love, and vitality. The reds are saturated and rich, like strong, healthy blood.

In phase 2, the cold blues creep across the surface, tempering the heart’s strength. Just like a lava flow, as the heart cools it first turns bluish grey and eventually goes black.

In phase 3,  the heart has been enveloped. The soft blue tones distract you from what’s actually happening inside. As the outer crust thickens, the heart at the core is compressed and cut off from the outside world.

As the phases progress, the sculptures blacken and the crust thickens. The subtitle “veiled” gives you a sense of the growing darkness. You can still see a few hints of the colour, of the life-force being compressed within.

Phase 5 is the blackest darkness, the deepest isolation in utter silence. But although it does represent “rock bottom”, that’s also the most encouraging thing about it. The only way to go from here is up.

Dark Matter, phase 6 (emerging)

Phase 6 is the most exciting of them all because you can see the first signs of the transformed heart emerging from her cocoon. Glowing reds and pinks shine through the cracks in the outer shell and the restricting sphere shape begins to soften.

This sculpture is the final phase, entitled “uncontainable”. It shows the heart having bursting through the thick, black crust that had encased it for so long.

This artist’s book combines semi-abstract images and text to explore family dynamics through personal experience. The work reflects on the different ways we respond to hardship and expresses gratitude for the strength and resilience that can emerge from difficult experiences.
