COLLAGE // PAPER GEOMETRY

 Für den Text auf Deutsch bitte hier klicken. The first of these works began with an act of frustration: dissatisfied with a drawing, I cut it into pieces and began rearranging the pieces.

The resulting collages and paper sculptures are composed of cut-up drawings, combining fragments of colour, line, and form into new relationships. I return to this process whenever I feel stuck. The clean lines and geometric structures offer a counterpoint to the density of my paintings, freeing me from my usual expectations and allowing me to reset through a process of simplification and play.

This image was inspired by the window decals on the Berlin U-Bahn. The older design showed the worst line drawing of the Brandenburg Gate that I’ve ever seen. It was so crooked and out of perspective that it looked like it would topple over. It was one of the top 10 things that drove Berliners crazy. Slowly, thankfully, the BVG (Berlin Public Transport Authority) has been replacing them.
